    John lived with his mother. The woman did some washing for the rich and could only buy some bread for her son. So the boy was short and thin.
    One cold morning there was much snow on the ground. John and his mother were walking along the street. Suddenly, a car knocked his mother down, hit the wall and then turned over with the wheels(轮子) upward(向上). She as well as the driver was taken to a hospital by some policemen. She didn’t tell John that his father had deserted(遗弃) her before he was born until she died that night. She left her son his father’s  name and address.

    John found his father. He was one of the richest shopkeepers and had to receive his son. But because John didn’t go to school, he could not read or write. Every day he was sad. He couldn’t forget what had happened to his mother when they were together that morning.
