Beijing will have 561 kilometers(349 miles) of subway by 2020 and it will take the place of London as the city with the world’s longest subway system, China Daily reported on November 20, 2006.
The network, which will stretch(伸展) to 19 lines, will reach every major corner of the city, though it is just a plan, the newspaper said.
Cities around China are spending billions of dollars building new subways to improve existing(当前的) systems. They try to beat the long-term traffic crowding that has come with years of booming(迅速发展) economic growth.
Beijing’s four subway lines carry 1.5 million people every day, and another three lines will enter service in time for the 2008 Olympic Games, the newspaper added.
By comparison, the London Underground’s network is 408 kilometers with 11 lines that carry more than three million people every day.
Beijing is spending about $40 billion improving infrastructure(基础设施) including road and rail links for the Olympics.
Beijing is also considering building six underground highways running north-south and east-west to ease pressure on its overburdened(超负荷的) ring roads, the Xinhua News Agency added.
