A Cihai (Sea of words) is one of China’s most popular dictionaries. Like an encyclopedia(百科全书), it covers many fields such as science, philosophy, history and so on. The 1999 edition of the dictionary had 19,485 Chinese characters and 122,836 vocabulary entries(词目), including “Deng Xiaoping Theory” and “Internet”. Now the editors have just started their preparation of the 2009 edition. However, a debate(争论) began when the media reported that Cihai would not include new terms such as “Super Girls”. Super Girls is a singing competition that started in 2004. Since its first appearance, it has made a great influence on Chinese society, especially the lives of young people. However, as a dictionary proud of its educational and historical value, Cihai prefers words with both popularity and stability(稳定性). That is to say, the words in Cihai not only have to be popular, but also must experience the test of time. Some people don’t agree with the ideas. They think editors should accept new rules and concepts(观念) on how to revise(修订) and make Cihai more colorful. If terms like “Ba Jin” can be in it, why not “Super Girls”? “We all agree on the great contribution of Ba Jin, but who can think little of the social influence of Super Girls?” a reporter said. |
